Little Liquid crystal display monitors

Liquid crystal display monitors aren’t exactly the same size as CRT screens. Small LCD monitors are actually bigger for exactly the same sized CRT monitor! Check measurements are measured diagonally. Because the advent from the television, this has been the industry standard for screen measurements. When computer screens hit the scene, the measurement started to be the diagonal measurement of the tube alone, not the real viewable display. When you take a look at your check, there is a plastic box that houses your CRT tube and other components, but whenever you take a look at the front of the monitor, there is most likely an inch or a lot more of framework close to your picture tube. This hides the rest from the CRT tube that’s enclosed within the box.

Now take a ruler or tape measure, and measure the actual image you are viewing, measure diagonally, and you will see that the actual measurement is smaller than the screens claimed size. For example, my 19 inch CRT check, measuring the real picture in the bottom left hand corner from the picture towards the upper correct hand corner is really 17.25 inches, or in other words, only .25 inches bigger than 17 inches, if the monitor measurement were the real viewing display this 19 inch check would only qualify like a 17 inch tft lcd monitor. This is where the Lcd measurement arrives in.

Small Lcd screens (and large kinds!) are measured by real viewable area from the display. They do not have a large rounded out tube beyond the display, it is really a flat panel of Liquid Crystals behind that are a series of tube lights that shine via the color crystals to illuminate your screen. A 17 inch Lcd monitor is 17 inches diagonally, a 19 inch check is 19 inches diagonal or about 1.75 inches bigger than my instance of the CRT tube.

Another small known glich in monitor measurements is how the diagonal measurement of a widescreen monitor decreases the general height of the monitor which in change decreases the real size of the regular 4:3 to some scaled-down dimension. Example: Should you purchase a 32 inch widescreen TV and watch a standard broadcast movie in it’s original format, you in essence are viewing a 26 inch television.
